SO LAST FRIDAY I MADE A FACEBOOK POST After being treated to several postings of a photo of Alleged Dead bomber #1, I posted the following on my facebook page:
"Several people have posted graphic pictures of the dead bomber on facebook. And the comments are almost always of the cheering variety. And if we are to maintain moral superiority over people who blow up 8 year old boys, we need to refrain from dancing on the graves of the dead. I understand the anger and fury, but if we give up the rule of law in favor of a revenge bloodlust, we have lowered ourselves and our way of life. And they have won."
I meant no disrespect to those who wanted to cheer the death of this awful person who killed a child and others indiscrimately. I was simply saddened by the fact we've been reduced to a nation cheering someone's death. I am not broken hearted by his death. In fact, I think justice was likely done. I want the police to track down the people who may have helped these two, and bring them to justice as well. If the alleged bomber #2 is charged federally, I believe he will have earned the death penalty. And even as one who does not support the death penalty, I will see the justice in that. However we do ourselves and our humanity no good when we post invectives urging a speedy dispatch to Hell.
The fact these men deserve it should not serve as an excuse to debase ourselves by gloating in vulgar terms. I get the temptation. I've engaged in it myself. I was happy when the first guy got shot that things seemed to be wrapping up so fast. But I was also immediately curious about what motivated these two seemingly assimilated young men to perpetrate this horror. It is getting more and more difficult to pretend the older brother's increasingly radicalized faith wasn't a factor. And this would certainly make it increasingly difficult to tell ourselves that radicals are easy to radicalize because they are poor and uneducated and live in lands torn apart by wars started by the US. And increasingly more difficult to pretend that simply spreading good cheer and winning hearts and minds is going to fix it.
For those who took me to task as "part of the problem" for making this country a bunch of wusses, I never said to not fight back. Or hold people accountable. I simply said to do both with dignity and the gravity that taking a human life for any reason should warrant. This isn't about laying down and giving up, it's about defending our way of life and our values without giving up our way of life and our values. Just a point of clarification and we shall discuss tomorrow.
One more thing. Apparently, the bombers did NOT have a permit for the guns they possessed. Surely expanded background checks would've prevented them from getting weapons.
WANT TO KNOW HOW FAR DOWN THE SLIPPERY SLOPE WE ARE? For all of the talk amongst Tea Partiers (who are immediately dismissed as "tin foil hat' people by the Left) this blog posting makes a pretty compelling case for being concerned about the slippery slope. Although one could argue, we are already sitting at the bottom of the slope and didn't feel the slide at all.
SO WHEN WILL THE KENTUCKY DEMS TELL US WHAT THEY KNEW WHEN? For all the bluster about how NO one pays attention to Progress Kentucky and how NO one pays attention to the two men allegedly fingered for the illegal recording at Mitch McConnell's office, more info is out about how well connected Shawn Reilly actually is. It's too bad the local media coudn't take a break from it's fawning coverage of Matthew Barzun to ask if HE knew Shawn Reilly, since they went to the White House together.
