METRO COUNCIL SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED Because Barbara Shanklin, whose sense of responsibility for squandering tax payer dollars is still zero, remains on the Council. Why? Because she's nice? Well liked? Or black? Considering that all five black members of Council voted to keep her, I think it's fair to say race came into play here. At least for them. She is, at the minimum, incompetent. She was found guilty of unethical behavior. Why does she get a pass? And that's not a particularly flattering commentary on the ethics of those who voted no to remove her. I'd like to ask Attica Scott, David Tandy, David James, Mary Woolridge, Cheri Bryant Hamilton, Dan Johnson and Brett Ackerson what one has to abuse to get kicked off council. And if Brett Ackerson thinks this didn't meet that legal standard to kick her off, is he going to sponsor an ordinance to change that? This is shameful. SHAMEFUL. At least the Charging Committee has the good grace to be embarrassed. From their late night press release:
“Seven members of the Metro Council Court weighed the evidence and made a determination that the well documented wrongdoing and unwarranted benefit received by Councilwoman Shanklin and her family did not require her removal from office. Needless to say, we disagree with the decision. We fully anticipate the constituents of these members will remember tonight’s decision.
The Ethics Commission, without the benefit of subpoena power, unanimously recommended removal of Councilwoman Shanklin. We, the Charging Committee did our duty to the Community by bringing these charges. While this decision allows her to stay on the Council, we believe this episode has severely damaged the public’s view of the entire Metro Council. We hope that one day; the Council can recover the respect of its electorate."
THIS IS JUST MEAN If these allegations are true, what a jerk Terrence Jones is. They say you learn the most about a man's character by how they treat someone who can do nothing for them. This isn't a very flattering picture of his character.
BUT I'M SURE AN ADDITIONAL 300,000 PEOPLE WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM As the Guvnah prepares to add 300,000 more people to the Medicaid rolls, more doctors are dropping out of the system. The disastrous, mismanaged, incompetent rollout of managed care is to blame. I wonder why other states have managed to do managed care without these kinds of disasters? I wonder how Passport has been so successful here yet they were shut out of managed care business around the state? Failure. Of. Leadership.
GO SKYLER, GO! I love this story! Larue County's own Skyler Hornback set a new record on Jeopardy! Congrats to Skyler! Well done!
WHY DOES THIS NOT SURPRISE ME? More evidence that our no-dad-around culture is having long term damaging effects: this study on disability. Sure, they don't care about working. But the most telling stat to me is how many don't have a clue about their father's level of educational attainment. We have to stop this cycle of fatherless children.
COULD A MURDER CASE UNDERMINE KENTUCKY'S TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT? Two lesbians who entered into a civil union in New Hampshire are creating some questions in a Kentucky courtroom about recognizing such unions. Should one of the women be forced to testify against her partner in a murder trial? Prosecutors point to Kentucky's traditional marriage amendment that says only a marriage between a man and woman will be recognized as such. But the Commonwealth's Constitution also provides for equal protection under the law. This could get very interesting very quickly. Expect some serious legal challenges on this one.
I CAN TELL YOU WHY RATINGS ARE DOWN Because watching MSNBC requires a suspension of logic and rational thought that most people can't sustain after they sober up. Conservatives don't watch it because they know it's tripe. Liberals don't watch it because they know when you talk about liberalism too long, it starts to sound like tripe to them. It's why progressive radio doesn't work.
