(As heard on the Early Birds with Drew Deener this morning, in his daily segment with BTI)
For those UK fans with the ESPN score app for their cell phones, they received a very interesting score update at halftime of UK's game against Florida Saturday. It read: Florida 17, Kentucky 1, Halftime. Now, obviously, there seemed to be 2 problems with that update. First, the score was incorrect. The score was actually Florida 24, Kentucky 0. But more important, fans wondered how exactly Kentucky would score just 1 point without scoring a touchdown. Seems impossible, right?
Not so fast my friends. In fact, as discovered by sports blog around the country, there is an obscure rule in college football that allows a team to score a 1-point SAFETY, only applying during extra points. If a safety was to occur for either team during an extra point try, the result would not be the normal 2 points, but in fact 1 point. So, in theory, a team could finish the game with 1 point, although no known record of a team scoring just 1 point has been found. Although, several instances have occurred of teams scoring the 1-point safety, just not as their only points of the game.
Above you will find a video of 1 such occurance, the most notable in recent memory. Texas and Texas A&M clashed in 2004, and the Longhorns were a beneficiary of the elusive 1-point safety.
