Expect Crowded Roads During Thanksgiving Travel Period. Travel volume during the Thanksgiving holiday period continues to increase steadily from a low point in 2008, according to data from AAA. The travel group estimates 43.6 million Americans will take trips of 50 miles or more during the Thanksgiving weekend, up from 43.3 million a year ago. The projected increase marks the fourth year of growth in a row since 2008, when travel dropped by 25%. AAA defines Thanksgiving holiday travel period Wednesday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25. "Thanksgiving travel hit a decade low in 2008 when only 37.8 million Americans traveled," said AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet. "Since that year we have seen a steady increase in the number of travelers taking to the roads and skies for the holiday." AAA said it expects the national average price of gasoline to fall to between $3.25 and $3.40 a gallon by the holiday. Last year's average of $3.32 was the most expensive average ever on Thanksgiving. Recently the average has declined - by almost 40 cents a gallon since early October - and should continue falling through year's end. The national average gas price on Thanksgiving from 2007 to 2011 was $2.75 a gallon. AAA asked people intending to travel which days they would depart for and return from Thanksgiving.
